Hi,
This is a must watch video of GK802:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHtQvGyV6Mk
(Original article that triggered the find
http://liliputing.com/2013/01/install-ubuntu-linux-on-the-100-zealz-gk802-quad-core-mini-pc.html
)
1. Some interesting heat sinking material
2. There is no soldered flash! It uses a micro SDCard for OS!!
Doh!
Why didn't anyone else think of that?! :-)
This kind of thing should now be possible for all
these matchbox computers because of f2fs.
F2fs (flash friendly file system http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F2FS )
merged into the kernel that allows ordinary flash to be used
http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/F2fs-flash-friendly-filesystem-integrated-into-Linux-1773746.html
F2fs keeps writing files to new locations and then cycle
back to the beginning allowing even wear levelling.
The great thing is that you can now yank out the OS
and put a new OS in seconds. No way to brick a device.
The basic chip price ($40 ?) kills it for wider adoption.
The GK802 has quad core freescale CPU which is supposed
to be more open source friendly than other CPUs.
However there is still a lot of stuff in the chip under NDAs which means
no one can write decent graphics software for it.
So less chip sales, and higher chip prices as is usual for
all ARMs of this type!
Seeking an opinion now:
Is it worth learning up this chip for a possible
additional SoM board / EOMA board?
I especially like the idea of quad core,
and OS on uSDCard with f2fs and since they got it
working its only a matter of time before all must
follow.
