 right. that's easy to fix.  modify the boot.cmd to reference
root=mmcblp0p1 ....

 ... and then, yes: run the mkinit blah blah command which blah blah

 or, if you can't be bothered to do that then.. well... make an sdcard
with 2 partitions, leave the first one blank :)
