(I'm running into similar problems as you. ) If you want to quickly test Ethernet, you can download the cubieboard a20 ubn image and use Phoenix suite to "burn" it to the NAND. It will install Linaro with a perfectly functional X desktop and eth and ahci enabled, needs the eoma68 uboot and fex changed to properly enable mmc and sata. If I can get u-boot to flipping build correctly, I could finally test SATA.
building u-boot _really_ shouldn't be problematic. grab it straight
from sunxi (as on the wiki boot page), do the "make" command henrik
gave us (also on the wiki) and you're off.

i've been testing with =M otherwise you get no modules to test! i'll
