It turns out the reason is the file /usr/lib/libGLESv2.so , link to 
/usr/lib/libGLESv2.so.2 was missing , and that caused gles apps to fail 
silently (without exiting for not having fount the proper library)

So, the kind of error it does is strange indeed, but is solved
