right, i just powered up one of the MEBs after shorting D1, i also
used a USB-to-power conversion cable in order to guarantee *exactly*
5.0v input, fired it up and the USB host works perfectly.  i'm just
doing a recompile now to find out if ethernet works.

just... don't ask how i got it to boot: it involved a series of hoops
starting with a bit of wire across the u-boot terminals and plugging
in usb-otg whilst it was in the amphenol pcmcia holder (the one i'd
put rs232 onto), booting up debian, then moving into the MEB....
