 ahh.... it's altogether possible that the LCD has been powered off -
or brightness set to zero - and powering back on hasn't been done yet.

 the reason for _that_ may be that it is in fact u-boot that is
successfully initialising the screen (including power) and we simply
haven't got the LCD poweron sequence yet, such that when it's powered
off, it will never come back on again.
