Yeah - it's slightly problematic that you can't actually see what you're typing :-) however, despite how it looks you are actually on tty1 and you can run commands (after authenticating I think). By piping the output to a file, the output can be viewed in the GUI. Slightly non-intuitive I agree, but it (sorta) works.

uname -a 2>&1 uname.out

This command produced the output file in /home/midfun which you can view using the web browser in the GUI. Still no root access so far as I can tell. I haven't done enough key bashing in tty1 to see what happens yet.
