btw: dpkg on its own is a piss-poor system. it's absolutely shit.
however when you combine it with apt, and apt starts to do things like
execute post-install scripts after a batch of .debs has been installed
(to run common tasks such as update-menu, update-grub, depmod -a,
ldconfig and so on) then you start to appreciate what the fuck is
going on.
like troy said: do you *really* want to take a step backwards? the
complexity behind dpkg [and apt] is there from over 20 years
accumulated experience of several hundred developers to bring you easy
access to over thirty *THOUSAND* pieces of software, each of which has
critical interpendence.
you are more than welcome to throw that experience and accumulated
knowledge all away.
