just an update here.  i've successfully linked and updated the
schematics to the PCB file.  each had different information, so the
synchronisation took 5 iterations (!).  the size of the PCB is 73mm x
46mm, and i've got it down to 6 layers.

due to the synchronisation (and import/conversion) issues, the
schematics have been a bit... messed up.  i had to go through almost
100 parts and turn them round 3 times before they became the right way
up, and even then many of them wouldn't fit because they used a
different sized decal... oops....

if anyone would like to help out here, that would be fantastic.
