Also I think I have figured out why I wasn't able to build the correct
architecture package, it's the same as in this bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=664854

"export DEB_HOST_ARCH=armhf" before make-kpkg seems to do the trick.
