With this kernel, I have to give the following command for a user
account to get network access:

sudo groupadd -g 3003 aid_inet
sudo usermod -a -G aid_inet mike

I believe this is because the kernel is derived from Android. Does
anyone know the tweaks required to the .config file so that non-root
accounts are granted network access by default?

Mike
