Just as a brief note to this: the kernel linked to here:
http://rhombus-tech.net/allwinner_a10/a10_image/ is an *Android* kernel
and has Android weirdnesses!

In particular, I've just discovered that it's been compiled with
CONFIG_ANDROID_PARANOID_NETWORK, which forbids network access to uids
which aren't in group 3003. Which means that in order for my dg user to
able to, e.g., do anything I need to do this:

groupadd -g 3003 aid_inet
usermod -G aid_inet dg

What's the state of custom Linux kernels for the A10? The wiki mentions
three different kernel trees, but there's no information about what's
supported.
