I have not followed this thread closely. The source is only useful if
that source code is under a license that allows reuse in ffmpeg etc
(i.e. GPLv2 or compatible)

If that source is proprietary then it's poison to any project aiming for
free software and as any work which reuses parts of that source is per
definition unusable and cleaning up a such mess is a hell job.

The ugliness of mixing sourcee of incompatible licenses goes both ways,
Just as a proprietary project can get poisoned by GPL code GPL code can
get poisoned by proprietary code.
