 and for fuck's sake don't get western digital "green" 1.5Tb drives.
i bought four of those.  their temperatures ramped up to 45C
immediately, peaked at 60C on setup into a RAID1 mirror, and corrupted
within hours.  i had a really tough 2 months investigating the problem
and keeping the customer's data stable, which by then had *already*
been transferred onto the drives, because even doing a fsck on the
ext4 filesystem was enough to *cause* data corruption, the WD drives
were *that* unstable.

 all of them - every single one of them (from the same batch) - turned
out to be faulty.  for each one of these *new* drives, when running
the hard drive checking program, showed a "time to failure" of 75 hrs.
 i was seriously fucking pissed off with WD, and will never use their
drives ever again.

 by contrast, the replacement 1.5tb Hitachi drives didn't go above 34C
even at full tilt.
