ok - rrright, after finding out about the midfun thing, it's actually
quite important to give chitech an alternative and entirely
non-gpl-violating gnu/linux distro, so adam has been experimenting
setting up debian on his ctpc89e. however, this has been hampered by
an "apt-get upgrade" running into exactly the same problem i found six
weeks ago.

to fix the problem, i edited /usr/sbin/install-info and just put "exit
0;" at about line 3.

this has the side-effect of stopping any info pages from being
installed, which is great!

now i am going to install xfce4, see how much space that takes up.

but, frans, just to say: adam followed the debian installer
instructions, but has left the chitech kernel on the machine (not the
debian one for now) and it's working great. i'm currently logged in
over openvpn and messing about on tiny netbook that's around 8,000
miles away :)
