Thanks. I've implemented this (with some fixes), but it doesn't solve the 
volume issue. It's still at 100% when I start playing a new song even 
though the alsamixer settings are correct.

I also wonder if reading/writing with the codec set to NULL can really 
accomplish anything.

A module unload for the sound driver results in a NULL dereference, but I'm 
not sure whether that's due to our changes or pre-existing. I would guess 
pre-existing.
