well, i poo'd up my machine :)

we now have a legitimate reason for needing the firmware.

following the boot-press-both-mouse-buttons procedure i get some words
in chinese which my partner has translated as meaning basically that a
file is missing off of the SD-Card, but the chinese words on the
screen don't say what that file is, just that one is missing.
