ha, i remember that.  and trying to write a better alternative
(multi-user, tokenring style) as a way to learn c, except i didn't use
select and on trying to kill it, it left a zombie process running at
100% CPU on the SunOS 4.1.3 minicomputer.  as it was during the
inter-term break, i went to see one of the sysadmins in the Imperial
College Dept of Computing to sort it out.  he was later severely told
off for rebooting the machine.
