I'd say that we humans need God period, he upholds our very
existence every second. Our ultimate purpose is to have a relationship
with Him and if we don't then we are not really alive. That's why it's
so important to make everyone aware of this need. That's why Jesus' very
last instruction to his followers was to 'spread the good news'.

As a christian I have a twofold duty:
1. Help the people around me to understand our most basic human need
which is to have a relationship with God and to help them find and build
that relationship.
2. Care for the other needs of my 'neighbours', such as food, water,
having a home, etc.

The two go together but the first one is the most important because that
is what makes the difference 'when we have shuffled off this mortal
coil'

(I hope I'm not coming on too strong this time!)
