Personally I haven't used RS232 in ages, only different "TTL" serial
variants of 5V or 3.3V.

You don't generally find a computer with a RS232 port today (except
mine), so you anyway need some USB dongle, and then you can just as well
use a "TTL" USB serial dongle with suitable voltage.
