 y'know what i'd start from?  a chroot off of debian.  slackware's
really unusual in that it basically has the rule "if it don't build
without modification, it don't go in".  so, i'd suggest he start from
debian, build the packages using native gcc (slow as it is), install
the absolute minimum possible to get away with into a chroot and test
it.  if that works, he can drop it onto a separate sd card and try
booting it, using the same kernel, u-boot and boot params that got
debian up-and-running.

 it's quite straightforward :)
