Yes the HDMI has audio, but its not convenient to use. 

Luke got me in touch with connextant with a really cheap USB-IC and I have a Sabernet USB Audio dongle that is Linux compat. Can't test it yet because my ttl serial cable is missing so no Debian yet. Hacking together a max3232 today. 

Using a splitter works but its not ideal.
