libavcodec _is_ ffmpeg (well, a part of).  Hence the name 
"libav" for the fork of ffmpeg (used by Debian).

Phonon uses a high level backend.  For now (4.8), it has at 
least two: VLC and Gstreamer.  (Well, there is a third one: 
null, but not a very interesting one :o)

So, in regards to widespread applications, I think almost every 
base is covered ... and by one player: ffmpeg (kudos to them).
