don't atheros make a chip that fits the bill?

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k

a friend wrote the "binary" driver for them. i thought the reason it was
binary-only was because it drove the hardware directly and therefore
needed to be binary for regulatory reasons. the driver was then reverse
engineered and then atheros released source.
