 could someone do that (to the first partition) and make it available
online somewhere?

 oh, btw, i opened up the machine and i found that on the SO-DIMM with
the processor, there is a DIP switch.  flicking it makes booting fail
miserably :)  exactly what's going on there i don't know: it's
probably trying to boot from SDcard, direct.

 OK.  rrright.  by pressing down the two mouse buttons at startup,
when the SDcard is "FAT" filesystem formatted, and there is a file
zImage on the root of the filesystem, i do NOT get the warning in
chinese "SD card unreadable".

 hmmm....
