Possibly a foolish thought, but how about allowing for multiple power
supplies, preferably with some way of detecting which one broke so one
could then send an email about it before the other one packs up?

That's the idea we're supporting with the MEBv3 with the AP6503a, although, it only supports up to 3 ampres, it'll handle a voltage range of 4.5v-23vdc.
