I've just been playing with entering various passwords on that initial
startup display box - if you enter the wrong password there - it says
"incorrect password" - if you enter the keyboard cursor then you go
straight into the account that is default.<br>

There are some passwords in the /etc/password files - if you enter this
into the browser ....<br>

Yeah - it's slightly problematic that you can't actually see what you're typing :-) however, despite how it looks you are actually on tty1 and you can run commands (after authenticating I think). By piping the output to a file, the output can be viewed in the GUI. Slightly non-intuitive I agree, but it (sorta) works.
uname -a 2>&1 uname.out
This command produced the output file in /home/midfun which you can view using the web browser in the GUI. Still no root access so far as I can tell. I haven't done enough key bashing in tty1 to see what happens yet.
