And loose them forever.
Relax.
And I totally disagree with you on the usefullness of a mailinglist.
Just like wikis mailinglist archives are very much searchable and
suprisingly structured. And unlike wikis they have a natural deprecation
of old information where most people naturally expect things to have
changed a bit when reading a 5 year old mail, while reading a 5 year old
wiki page you still expect the information to be 100% correct.
mailinglists are very suitable for work in progress announcements and
discussions. A wiki is not.
A wiki is great for many things, but being a dumping ground for
experimental, shortlived and often incorrect information is not one of
them.
IRC is great for social chatter and quickly getting in touch and
catching up on specific matters. But very poor for exchaning actual
information.
You'll end up with much higher quality information by
a) Let information flow as it comes. Don't put up artificial barriers
holding back the information flow.
b) Make sure there is some resources to collect interesting information
and nudge people to update where appropriate. Some information
absolutely should go into wiki, but often requires some discussion
before.

Henrik
